Connecticut State Troopers announced that they will be patrolling the state’s roads for Christmas and New Year’s, so drivers should plan sensible driving plans along with their holiday celebrations.

Many travelers are expected to hit Connecticut highways during the upcoming holidays. State Troopers ask motorists to follow all driving laws, as their behavior on the roads is essential to keeping potential hazards at a distance. Simply putting traffic laws into practice will prevent accidents and save lives:

  • Drive the speed limit.
  • Keep a safe distance between your vehicle and the one in front of you.
  • Ensure that all passengers are wearing seatbelts.
  • Signal when turning, changing lanes or taking an exit.
  • Refrain from texting or using your phone.
  • Never consume alcohol or prescription drugs before you get behind the wheel.
  • Move over (when safe to do so) whenever law enforcement, fire trucks, ambulances or tow trucks are occupying a lane. Please give them room to do their job efficiently and safely.

Drivers are also reminded to plan their trips with care:

  • Fill the gas tank prior to your journey.
  • Check windshield wipers, windshield wiper fluid and tire pressure.
  • Fully charge your cell phone.
  • Carry winter blankets, drinking water and snacks
  • Check traffic conditions before leaving home
  • Keep a shovel and sand or salt in the trunk of your vehicle.

“Your cooperation is critical to ensuring the well-being of all who are driving our highways and roads throughout the holiday weekend,” police officials said in a press release. “Whenever you get behind the wheel, safety must be your top priority.”

Police ask residents to partner with them to keep the roadways safe for all motorists.

State Police will operate roving patrols and conduct DUI checkpoints starting Dec. 22 and continuing through the Christmas and New Year’s holiday.

Troopers will enforce all motor vehicle laws and focus on reducing the number of DUIs, crashes and injury-producing accidents occurring on the interstates, state roads and local roadways.

During last year’s holiday season (Dec. 22-26), state police reported 528 accidents across the state resulting and 58 accidents with injuries, including 1 serious injury and four fatalities.

During the 2016 enforcement initiative, police reported 47 DUI arrests, 579 speeding citations, 50 seatbelt violations, and 1,596 moving violations (including following too close, distracted driving, cell phones, etc.). During the same period, police reported 8,046 calls for service and 436 motorist assists for flat tires or broken down and disabled vehicles.

Two police officers were bitten by a dog last Thursday while serving a warrant. During the incident, one of the officers fired his weapon at the animal.

Bristol police said last Thursday, at approximately 1 p.m., two officers attempted to serve an arrest warrant at 476 Broad St. While speaking to a resident of the apartment, police said the resident’s dog ran out from behind the home.  The dog approached the officers while they were on the front porch. The dog began to growl and bark at the officers.

Police said one of the officers attempted to put a chair that was on the porch between himself and the dog. However, the dog was able to get around the chair and bite the officer on his left arm. The officer was able to get the dog to release his arm. The dog then turned back at the officer, as though it was going to attack the officer again. The officer feared for his safety and drew his duty weapon. The officer discharged his fireman one time at the dog. The dog was struck and ran away from the officers.

The BPD’s Animal Control Officer was called to the scene and transported the dog to an emergency veterinarian. The dog was described as a large Bullmastiff- Pitbull cross.

The officer was treated at the scene for a minor injury to his left forearm. No other injuries were reported.

The investigation is being conducted by the BPD’s Patrol Division, with the assistance of the BPD’s Identification Division.

The subject of the warrant was not located at the address, said police.

Free smoke detectors available from city

$

A recent house fire that destroyed a local residence and put its owner in the hospital with severe burns is a reminder that the risk of structure fires greatly increases during the winter months.

Whether the cause is faulty Christmas tree ornaments, flammable materials next to heaters, or accidental ignition of heating fuels, cold weather situations increase the odds of a fire starting. The Bristol Fire Department went on over 2,300 calls last year with many of those in the winter months. Even though over 93 percent of those fires are held to minimal damage, there is still an estimated loss totaling more than $1.25 million.

The home destroyed last week is still being evaluated for the cause but one thing for certain is that it didn’t have any smoke alarms installed. Unfortunately, Bristol’s history of these types of fires is filled with tragedy. In 2014-2015, four fatalities resulted from fires in homes without smoke detectors.

“Fires don’t care what time of year it is or who it affects. The best way to fight a fire is prevention,” said Bristol Fire Chief Jay Kolakoski in a press release from the city of Bristol. ” Because cold weather affects everyone, we really encourage people to take advantage of a program we have that could give any Bristol resident a new fire or carbon monoxide (CO) alarm and our firefighters will come free of charge to provide the alarms and actually install them.”

The City of Bristol received two grants from the Federal Emergency Management Agency that concluded the Bristol Fire Department (BFD) is well equipped and trained to respond to the needs of the community. Especially with regard to the fire prevention program, the city’s press release said, the report noted the city was successfully targeting commercial properties but stated that, the BFD needs to target their public fire education efforts at high-risk populations and older buildings within the city. Residential fires occur most frequently in the dense, older sections of the city in areas primarily filled with modest single-family and multi-family homes.

Fatal fire events such as these have a devastating impact on a community, as well as on the families, neighbors, and fire personnel involved in the rescue efforts. The press release said the BFD is determined to address the lack of smoke alarms in older homes and to ramp up their efforts to make sure there are functioning alarms in every home through an educational campaign and the Smoke Detector Distribution Program.

With a grant from FEMA, the press release said the city has 10-year lithium battery smoke detectors available for free to homeowners who request them. Fire personnel will install as many smoke detectors as are needed in the home, usually three. One of these may include a CO detector as well, if the home has an oil heating system.

These units will be installed free of charge upon appointment with the BFD. Call (860)584-7964 ext. 4 between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. to schedule an appointment. Fire personnel from the station closest to your address will arrange to visit your home at a time convenient to you.
