The intersection of South Street, Union Street and Church Street is closed due to an incident involving a FedEx delivery truck that struck a power line late this morning.
According to a press release from the Bristol Police Department, the truck driver was southbound on Church Street and turned left onto South Street. As he passed through the intersection, the top of the truck struck a low power line across the roadway, the release said. But as the truck continued eastbound on South Street, the power line and all adjoining utility wires were pulled down, the utility pole snapped, and the wires wrapped around the truck as it came to a stop, the release said. The driver could not leave the truck, as it was wrapped in a charged power line, the release said.
As the wires were pulled down by the truck, said the release, another driver passed by, heading westbound on South Street. The female driver reported she was shocked as she passed by the FedEx truck, but was conscious and alert at the scene, the release said. She was sent to Bristol Hospital for evaluation, the release said.
Police said in the release that crews will be repairing the damage for eight hours, and drivers traveling through the area are urged to find an alternate route. Residents and businesses in the area may experience a power loss.
