BRISTOL, Conn. (AP) _ A Bristol woman authorities say hanged her two dogs and buried them in her backyard has pleaded guilty.

Twenty-three-year-old Veronica Reyes is expected to be sentenced in May to five years in prison, suspended after six months.

She pleaded guilty Wednesday in Bristol to maliciously killing an animal under the Alford doctrine, meaning she doesn’t agree with the state’s case, but concedes there’s enough evidence to secure her conviction.

Police say they responded to Reyes’ home in November after a neighbor reported that one of the dogs was hanging from a tree in the front yard. Police say they found both dogs buried in the backyard.

Her attorney says Reye entered an Alford plea because she told officers she had been hallucinating that night and doesn’t remember exactly what happened.bristol-police_dl_16-x-9
