A Bristol man was arrested and charged last Friday after assaulting two Bristol police officers who were responding to a suspicious vehicle complaint in Page Park near Dewitt Drive.
According to a press release from the Bristol Police Department, Thomas Birdsell became belligerent and violent when one officer approached him in the vehicle that was parked in a wooded parking area off of Dewitt Drive. Birdsell punched the officer in the head and face several times, the release said. When the second officer tried using a taser, it was ineffective at first, but when used a second time, the taser was momentarily effective until Birdsell was able to move a taser probe, and struck the officer’s head and face several times, the release said. An officer in trouble signal was put out to all cars and responding units subdued the suspect to take him into custody, the release said.
Officers Brian Hileman and Daniel Perkins were both sent to Bristol Hospital where they were released after treatment for head and facial injuries, the release said. Birdsell also was treated for injuries at the hospital, and went back into police custody after he was released, the release said.
According to the release, Birdsell was driving a stolen vehicle, where narcotics and drug paraphernalia were found. Birdsell was charged with third degree larceny, possession of cocaine, possession of drug paraphernalia, interfering with an officer, two counts of assaulting an officer, and violation of a city ordinance for being in a park after posted hours. He was held on a $250,000 surety bond for appearance in Bristol Superior Court today.
