A man was shot early Sunday morning at a Riverside Avenue bar. Although shot in the abdomen, police said his injuries were not life-threatening. Another man also was assaulted and was left unconscious, said police.
Police reported that Sunday, Sept. 7 at about 12:58 a.m., officers were dispatched for a reported disturbance at the Gate Way Café, 211 Riverside Ave. Police said several callers reported someone had been shot.
Upon arrival at Gate Way, police said officers “encountered a chaotic scene as a large number of patrons were trying to leave the cafe.”
Police said officers found a male victim who had been assaulted. He was unconscious and had obvious wounds to his face. While officers were providing medical assistance to the victim they were told that a second victim had been shot and was transported to Bristol Hospital by other patrons of the café.
Police said the assault victim was transported by Bristol EMS to St. Francis Hospital in Hartford. He was treated for his injuries and released.
The victim, who had been shot in the abdomen, underwent surgery, at Bristol Hospital, said police. His injury was non-Life-threatening.
Police said it is unclear if the two victims know each other or if the assault and shooting are related.
The shooting suspect, who had been in the establishment earlier in the evening, returned, said police. He entered through a rear door, and fired multiple shots into the crowd of people. He fled the scene prior to police arrival and has not been identified at this time.
