Suspect accused of trying to steal copper pipes on Union Street

One man was arrested and another suspect is on the loose following a reported burglary on Union Street on Saturday, where suspects were stealing copper plumbing.

Police arrested Carlos Rivera, 39, of 78 Collins Rd., Bristol. He was charged with burglary in the third degree, conspiracy to commit burglary in the third degree, criminal attempt to commit larceny in the first degree, conspiracy to commit larceny in the first degree, possession of burglary tools, criminal mischief in the first degree and conspiracy to commit criminal mischief in the first degree. Police said Rivera was being held on a $50,000 surety bond for arraignment in Bristol Superior Court on Tuesday, Sept. 2.

Police said that at 8:44 a.m. on Aug. 30, officers were called to a burglary in progress at 38 Union Street. Police said a neighbor called the police after witnessing two men breaking into the unoccupied home. Upon arrival of the police, a news release from the department said, the two male suspects ran from the home.

One of the two males, Rivera, was apprehended by police after a short foot pursuit. The second suspect has not been located at this time.

The owner of the building arrived with a plumbing contractor and upon investigating the damage found that approximately $20,000 to $25,000 dollars damage was done to the plumbing system. All the copper piping was cut and stacked in a room on the first floor, said police. All the radiators were also removed and stacked in a room for removal by the suspects.
