Police continue investigation of bank robbery scheme
The investigation into a bank robbery scheme continues, as police officers of Bristol and New Britain are still searching for the two suspects involved.
To date, both the New Britain Police Department and the Bristol Police Department have formed a task force, which will receive assistance from the FBI and state police for the investigation, according to a press release from the task force.
On Monday, the Bristol Police Department received a call from an official of the Achieve Credit Financial Union who reported one of their employees, 46-year-old Matthew Yussman, was currently being forced to wear an explosive device as a way to obtain money from the credit union, the release said.
Officers discovered that the event began in the early morning hours Monday when two men confronted Yussman when he arrived at his home, located at 133 Lufkin Lane in Bristol, said the release. The victim and his mother were bound and held in the home overnight, according to the release. Yussman was then sent out to the credit union with a device strapped to his body, the release said.
That same day, the mayor’s Facebook page reported a lockdown at both Northeast Middle School and Ivy Drive School (which are located near Lufkin Road) for a precautionary measure. The lockdown was later lifted as it was reported that all students and staff were safe in the building.
Based on statements from the suspects and the appearance of the device, Yussman believed it to be an explosive device, the release said. When Yussman arrived at the New Britain branch of the Achieve Financial Credit Union, he contacted the credit union official who eventually contacted police, according to the release.
That device was eventually rendered safe by the Connecticut State Police Bomb Squad and was turned over to the FBI for laboratory analysis, the release said. While the device was removed, Yussman received treatment for exposure after being in the unheated car, but did not have any other injuries, the release said. His mother was not hurt.
New Britain Police seized the car Yussman drove to New Britain, and the car will be processed for evidence by detectives pursuant to the search warrant, the release said. Late Monday night the Bristol Police Department issued a search warrant at Lufkin Lane to identify and collect any relevant evidence of the incident, according to the release.

Bristol police cracks down on texting and driving this month
Throughout the month of April, the Bristol Police Department and law enforcement officers statewide will use a combination of traditional and innovative strategies to crack down on motorists who text and drive.
According to a press release from the Bristol Police Department, the effort is part of a larger campaign by the CT Department of Transportation Highway Safety Office and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to crack down on motorists who text, talk, or distract themselves from driving.
The campaign, called “U Drive. U Text. U Pay,” consists of 50 law enforcement agencies statewide and is national in scope, the release said. Officers will be out in force looking for identify, stop, and cite motorists who choose to ignore the state’s handheld mobile phone ban and distracted driving laws, the release said. Fines range from $150 for the first offense to $300 for the second violation to $500 for each subsequent violation, the release said.
According to the release, distracted driving includes any activity that shifts a person’s attention away from the main task of driving. As texting requires visual, manual, and cognitive attention from the driver, it is considered to be one of the most alarming distractions, the release said.
According to latest data from the NHTSA, in 2013 nationwide, 3,154 people lost their lives and an estimated 424,000 were hurt in motor vehicle crashes involving distracted drivers, the release said.
“Our goal is simple. We want to save lives by enforcing Connecticut’s tough penalties for distracted driving, namely texting while driving,” said the police department in the release.
Although the focused enforcement mobilization will end April 30, the Bristol Police Department said in the release it will continue enforcing the handheld phone ban throughout the year.

Bristol police investigate heroin overdose deaths
The Bristol Police Department is investigating three separate heroin overdose deaths that took place in the city within a four-day span.
According to a press release from the Bristol Police Department, it is possible that the heroin being sold could be from a “bad batch.” But at this time, no correlation has been determined regarding these deaths, the release said.
At one of the scenes police found heroin packaging stamped with the likeness of President Ronald Reagan as well as the name Reagan stamped below it in red ink, the release said. Although this stamp can be connected to this overdose, it is not unusual for a batch to be distributed with multiple stamps, the release said.
In an effort to reduce fatalities from opioid overdoses this month, the Bristol Police Department deployed a Naloxone (Narcan) program, the release said. Officers with First Responder responsibilities have been trained in the use of Naloxone, which is now part of an officer’s medical equipment, the release said.
The police department’s Narcotic Division is working with regional drug enforcement agencies on the investigation into the deaths. Anyone with information is asked to call the Bristol Police Department at (860) 584-3051.
