The 2016 national Click It or Ticket (CIOT) seat belt enforcement mobilization kicked off May 23, and runs through June 5.
According to a press release from the Bristol Police Department, law enforcement officials are out on Connecticut’s roads enforcing the State Occupant Protection laws and issuing citations to those who are unbuckled.
The National Highway Safety Administration reports that nearly half of the 21,022 passenger vehicle occupants killed in crashes in 2014 were unrestrained, the release said.
As a reminder, all front seat occupants in a vehicle must wear safety belts, and only rear seat passengers under the age of 16 are required to wear safety belts, the release said. If the driver of a vehicle is 16 or 17 years old, all occupants in the vehicle are required to wear safety belts, the release said.
Although this year’s mobilization runs through June, officers are out enforcing seat belt laws year-round, the release said.
