On Oct. 18, the citizens of Bristol came together for an event to thank the police department for their dedication to protect and serve the Bristol community. That “Thank You” totaled $3,500 in contributions to the Bristol Police Benevolent Fund, which was presented to Officer Mark McGrane by the Bristol Chamber of Commerce on Monday, Dec. 7.
“Hearts Behind Badges: A Celebration of Bristol’s PD,” honored the police department’s historic service as well as the increased effectiveness of the police force in recent years through adopting a community oriented feet-on-the-street approach that has helped forge personal relationships with commercial and residential neighborhoods, fostering a safer environment for all.
“These guys and gals in uniform lay it on the line every day,” said Craig Yarde, event organizer and sponsor, according to a press release from the chamber. “Now they’re biking through the West End, they’re walking the streets frequently. There’s a new visibility that’s brave and necessary. In a world where police are often targets, these personal bonds set the standard for communal respect and a safer culture.”
Hearts Behind Badges featured local restaurants, dessert shops, live music entertainment and a memorable photo-op where several hundred community members posed with Police, proudly holding a “Hearts Behind Badges” banner. The community rallied behind the effort and donations poured into the Bristol Police Benevolent Fund. Officers commented how grateful they were for the community to recognize the force’s service.
“The positive way in which the police have approached their jobs and built relationships is paying dividends in keeping residents safe and comfortable,” said Yarde in the press release. “It’s evident through the way the community has responded with this gesture of support that they recognize the hard work that goes behind it all. I’m blown away by both sides really, and excited to have been part of this honor.”
The press release offered thank yous to Yarde Metals, The Bristol Chamber of Commerce, The Carpenter Family, Laviero Construction, Roland Dumont Agency, Tracy Driscoll Insurance and Financial Services, D’Amato Construction, True Value Just Ask Rental, Menchie’s Frozen Yogurt, 13th Floor Printing & Graphics, Briarwood Printing, and Dunkin Donuts.
