Motorcyclist serious injured in crash Monday night

A Simsbury man was left unconscious Monday night after his motorcycle collided with a vehicle at the intersection of Jerome Avenue and Stevens street.

Police said they received a call about 7:07 p.m. about a serious car crash involving a motorcycle.

Police said they found the motorcyclist, Michael Cheever Van Valkenburgh, 40, of Simsbury unconscious upon their arrival.

Police said Valkenburgh had been operating a 2008 Suzuki motorcycle, heading north on Jerome Avenue approaching the intersection of Stevens Street. The second vehicle, a 2001 Ford Explorer was operated by Walter Waskiewicz, 71, of Bristol was heading south on Jerome Avenue and starting to turn left onto Stevens Street, said police. The vehicles collided in the intersection and the motorcyclist was thrown to the pavement, police said.

A third vehicle, a 2014 Ford Escape operated by Gary Dufresne, 47, of Bristol was headed south on Jerome Avenue and approaching Stevens Street. Dufresne’s vehicle was struck by debris from the motorcycle after it collided with the Ford Explorer, said police.

Police said Valkenburgh was the only operator injured. He was transported to a Hartford area hospital by Bristol EMS with injuries to his head, femur, and left leg. His condition was listed as serious.

The crash is being investigated by the departments’ START (Serious Traffic Accident Reconstruction Team) Unit. At this time, no enforcement action has been taken.
