Three city police officers and a nurse were honored with Lifesaving Commendations for an incident in late 2016.

On Nov. 20, 2016, police said in a press release officers Brian Hileman, Tim Hall, and Daniel Perkins were dispatched to Firefly Brewing on Center Street for an unconscious person. Hileman arrived first, followed by Hall and Perkins. Hileman observed Rebecca Talbot, a registered nurse, performing CPR on an unconscious male inside the brewery.

While Talbot was administering rescue breathing, the press release explained Hileman began chest compressions. Perkins and Hall arrived and began to assist. They administered oxygen and hooked up an AED to the victim. A shock was advised and administered. However, it was not successful. They continued CPR and Bristol EMS arrived. While working to save the victim, he regained a pulse. He was transported to the hospital in critical condition.

The victim, a 70 year-old Branford resident ultimately survived and he was released from the hospital the next day, said police.

“The direct actions by Talbot and the three officers saved a person’s life. Rebecca Talbot, along with officers Hileman, Hall, and Perkins were awarded the Lifesaving Commendation,” said the police press release.

Connecticut State Police announced their plans for law enforcement as football fans prepare for Super Bowl Sunday on Feb. 5.

“Parties and gatherings can make Super Bowl Sunday one of the year’s most dangerous days on the roads and highways of our state due to impaired driving-related accidents,” police officials said in a press release. “The busy holiday season is past, but Super Bowl Sunday is an ‘unofficial’ holiday in the U.S. Troopers urge all Connecticut residents to proceed with caution as they celebrate with friends and family.”

Although kickoff is not until 6:30 p.m., Super Bowl Sunday tends to be an all-day celebration.

Troopers will be attentive to all roads and highways across the state for the possibility of drivers operating impaired, before and after the game.  As always, Troopers will enforce all motor vehicle laws.

“Travel the speed limit, always use signals when turning or changing lanes, wear your seat belt, and stay off your cell phone,” officials said in the press release. “Be alert to what other motorists are doing, be prepared to stop, or change lanes.  Act responsibly by designating a sober, non-drinking driver before the game even starts. Remember, fans never let fans drive impaired. Be prepared to call a taxi, Uber, or find a sober driver for that fan.”

During the 2016 Super Bowl Sunday, state police made 15 DUI arrests, issued issued 132 speeding tickets, and issued 424 violations, including following too closely, distracted driving, and using cell phones.

Police also noted that football pools are legals in Connecticut as long as all of the money taken in for the pool is distributed back to the winners participating in the pool. No percentage or cut can be taken by the person organizing the pool for his/her time and/or expense of running the pool. In addition, no betting pools of any kind can be run in any establishment or bar that sells alcohol.

Paul Gressak

A near-miss with a police car resulted in a drunken driving arrest in Southington. On Monday, Feb. 6, Paul Gressak, 35, of Bristol was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol or drug and failure to move over for a stationary emergency vehicle.

The incident occurred near the intersection of West Street and Executive Boulevard at approximately 11:13 p.m. The Southington police cruiser was stopped in the right northbound lane, when he observed Gressak’s vehicle approaching him from the rear at a high rate of speed. The officer began to pull his vehicle forward to avoid being struck, but Gressace slammed on his brakes and stopped approximately 5 feet behind the stopped cruiser.

Upon speaking with Gressak, the officer observed signs of intoxication. Gressak failed to meet the Standard with the field sobriety tests, and he was taken into custody. He was released on a $500 bond and is scheduled to appear in Bristol Court on Feb. 21.
